Elderly People Health Service Utilization Pattern: An Analysis of Effective Social and Demographic Factors

Population aging is one of the population phenomena that most countries in the world will encounter with that in the context of transition of age structure. The aging of the population has consequences that in order to face these consequences, it is necessary to implement intervention policies in social, economic, physical and mental dimensions. One of the most important preconditions for policy-making is identifying the situation of the elderly in context of socio-economic, demographic and physical and mental health characteristics. Consideration and identification of elderly people characteristics is important in improving and developing ageing policy making system. In order to study the pattern of health services utilization in elderly, have been used from Health Service Utilization Survey (secondary data analysis). That Survey was carried out in 2014 with 22470 samples. We had used this data for investigation of health service utilization pattern of elderly population by residential origin, gender, age, living arrangements, employment status and marital status. The results showed that 7.38% of the total population of the country need to receive inpatient services whereas, 16.48% of the elderly (60 years and older) need to inpatient services. The average cost of one-time hospitalization for hospitalized elderly is equal to 1672420 Tomans, which is at a higher level compared to the whole population of one-time hospitalization cost (1446214 Tomans).
