Assessment of the Role of Iranian Provinces in Edible Mushroom Production (2016)

Abstract:   (5 Views)
Edible mushroom production has gained attention due to its nutritional and medicinal value, its ability to be cultivated in limited space through vertical farming, the possibility of harvesting more than six crop cycles per year, and the affordability and accessibility of its cultivation substrate. This study presents an economic evaluation of the role of Iranian provinces in edible mushroom production. Raw data for this research were obtained from the Iranian Statistical Center’s 2016 report on mushroom production activities. Using Excel’s formula-writing capabilities, the raw data were transformed into economic evaluation metrics, including production volume, income, costs, and profit per square meter of cultivation area per year. Additionally, productivity and employment share of mushroom cultivation within each province’s total employment were calculated. To rank provinces in terms of mushroom production, composite indicators were developed based on two-factor combinations (profit and employment; productivity and employment) and a three-factor combination (profit, productivity, and employment). Spatial distribution maps of the calculated indicators were generated using the t-map package in the R programming environment. According to the results, provinces such as Ardabil, South Khorasan, and Ilam achieved profits exceeding 9 million rials per square meter, while provinces like Yazd, Qom, and Tehran experienced profits below 1 million rials per square meter in 2016. Based on the three-factor composite indicator, Ardabil and South Khorasan demonstrated superior performance in mushroom production compared to other provinces. Enhancing productivity in this sector could help elevate the standing of other provinces in this field.
